New England Watch and Ward Society bans American Mercury magazine.

March 31, 1926

(March) The organization objects to the inclusion in the April issue of a chapter from Herbert Asbury’s novel, Up from Methodism. Entitled “Hatrack,” it concerns a church-going prostitute. The society prosecutes the Greek immigrant owner of newsstand in Harvard Square for selling the magazine and it is removed from all other Boston area newsstands. Mercury editor, H.L. Mencken, comes to Boston to protest the action in April 1926.*
